PreForm seems to be able to repair the files much better even when the overlaps are extreme. What I have found so far that the OBJ format seems to come in cleaner into PreForm vrs STL when there are multiple mesh groups involved. Having version after version of models is not a great answer either. Another downside to permanent Booleans is they typically canвЂ™t undone unless you happen to have an expensive parametric modeler which most donвЂ™t. It doesnвЂ™t matter what program your using since if the object is too complex the Boolean operation will fail at some point due to system resources or it may take more than a lifetime to calculate. I use MOI3d and so far for the many years I have been using it MOI has NEVER crashed. I donвЂ™t use Blender because it is just a poly modeler and not suitable for cad work. In my experience, they are worth avoidingвЂ¦ Workarounds can cause their own problems. I still end up with non-manifold edges every once in awhile, but NetFabb generally takes care of these so I donвЂ™t have to go hunt them down in the source geometry and fix it thereвЂ¦ ItвЂ™s worth the effort of finding a way to get CSG to work, getting the geometry to be as clean as you can get it. If it changes a critical external dimension, I fix it after the CSG is done. I can usually solve those issues by making slight adjustments to the geometry in the overlapped regions. Rarely I run into something I canвЂ™t make work (or is too much work to make work). I find them and fix them as best as I can. These are due to mistakes IвЂ™ve made in modeling something, or by previous CSG operations I didnвЂ™t clean up properly. 1 and 2 vertice polys and stray points or degenerate polys tend to cause problems. Like 3DS, it sometimes has problems but more often than not itвЂ™s caused by an error in one of the polygon sets.

ItвЂ™s free and probably at least worth looking at. It does have some repair and analytics in it that is nice such as wall thickness. I did try meshmixer from Autodesk but havenвЂ™t run any of the models through yet. However you can in many poly editors that have the option to grow a selection like Hexagon or Silo3d and cut paste those connected groups into actual shapes then Boolean them back together. I havenвЂ™t found a mesh editor yet under $1000 that can automatically fix self intersections. What I have found is separate shapes that intersect severely cause self intersections that are hollow. Usually IвЂ™d I have errors I will check them model in an outside program. IвЂ™m not sure if Preform actually sees then model as separate entities as stl format. For me this has been the sweet spot.Д¬o-planet faces will cause grooves on the lower surface extending all the way until they hit another surface.

I try to keep the intersection less than one layer in height. I have had trouble if the sufaces overlap too much.

Make sure your model sufaces do not touch as to create co-planer faces. Gotta be from over-curing, probably because my build plate Z reference is too low, the first few layers are compressed to the point the laser is basically just re-curing whatвЂ™s already been printed. Tough 02 doesnвЂ™t appear to be any different than Tough 01 in this (or any other) regard.

I donвЂ™t even use the FL removal tool, I bought a 10' вЂњInsulation knifeвЂќ (a long thin blade) now since I can get it started under an edge and itвЂ™s thin/tapered enough I can drive it between the print and the plate all the way from one side to the other of the print. ItвЂ™s unusual I donвЂ™t break the base trying to pry the print off, and I often leave little shards that I have to chisel off the plate after getting the print off (I actually bought a 2' chisel for this specific purpose). Maybe itвЂ™s just my printer, but I go through fits trying to get some prints off the platform (a cruel irony, since I could never get Tough to stick to the build plate on my Form1+). 2 liters of Tough 01 and now IвЂ™m on to Tough 02. IвЂ™ve been printing pretty much exclusively with Tough.
